How often should you really trim your hair?
“The Hair Rule“
Growing up, many of us had always been taught the “cut your hair every six (6) to eight (8) weeks” rule. That is if we wanted truly long and luscious locks. However, as I got older, the more people I heard it from or asked, the more times the hair rule would vary from person to person. One person would say six (6) weeks, twelve (12) weeks, and so on, and so forth. But, how often should you really trim your hair? Well, Nicole’s Notable Nook is here to the bottom of things once and for all.
It still varies…
Well, I suppose it still depends on who you asked. Trust me. It still varies. But in all seriousness, I’ve done some digging so that we can finally get down to the bottom of the real hair rule. Well, a lot of people think that you know it’s time for your next hair cut at the first sight of split ends. For those of you who thought that, then I’m sorry, but you’re off a little. If you have split ends, then you’re past due for a trim.
How much does your hair grow?
I know a lot of us women that heard the “six (6) to eight (8) week hair rule” were told to get your hair trimmed that often so that your hair grow quicker, as well as stay healthier. However, according to American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), hair only grows an average of half an inch every month regardless of how much we trim it.
How do you know when you need to trim your hair?
Stylists alike say that you know when to trim your hair when your hair has become noticeably drier or more brittle. You can tell that by the feel, as well if you hair is getting harder to brush all the way through. Your hair just won’t work for you like it normally does, such as not laying right or styling right. It may feel or look lifeless, or lackluster.
So, how often should you really trim your hair?
It turns out that the majority of hair stylists asked about the hair rule, are saying to get a quarter to half an inch trimmed off every three (3) to four (4) months. it all depends on how much breakage that you have. That honestly sounds about right because if we get our hair trimmed every six (6) to eight (8) weeks, then how does your hair even have time to grow long? However, depending on your length and hair type (curly, straight, etc.), the time may vary. No worries, we’ll discuss this below.
The Time That Varies Depending On Your Hair Length
Short (A pixie hairstyle to a bob hairstyle):
- Every four (4) to six (6) weeks, unless you want your hair to grow longer. If you want your hair to grow longer, then get it trimmed every eight (8) to twelve (12) weeks
Medium (A bob hairstyle to any shoulder length hairstyles):
- Six (6) to eight (8) weeks if you want to keep it at that length. Eight (8) to twelve (12) weeks if you want it to grow longer.
Long Hair (Anything longer than shoulder length):
Keep your hair healthy in between trimmings
I know that most women want to keep their hair healthy and looking great. Therefore, it’s important to take care of your hair in between trimmings. You can do that by washing your hair every other day. If your hair is naturally dry, then use leave-in conditioner in your hair after washings. Also, regardless of your hair type or texture, use hot oil treatments every six (6) to eight (8) weeks.
Conclusion
Based on the frequency of trims recommended by stylists, it appears that trimming your hair every three (3) to four (4) months is the best way to prevent split ends and keep your hair healthy. However, the frequency with which you trim your hair depends on a number of factors, including your hair type, the amount of heat damage it withstands, and how often you use styling products. If you are unsure how often you should trim your hair, then it’s always good to ask a trusted hair stylist.
