How To Properly Contour Your Face
The Basics of Contouring
When it comes to beauty, contouring is one of the most popular techniques. Contouring can help you achieve a more defined and flattering look by adding depth and definition to your facial features. There are a few different contouring techniques you can use, and each has its own benefits.
One of the most common contouring techniques is using a light hand. Start by applying a light contour to the areas of your face that are naturally darker, such as your cheekbones, nose, and chin. Use a brush or your fingers to apply the contour in a gentle, circular motion. Be sure to blend the contour into your skin well so that it looks natural.
If you want to add more depth and definition to your facial features, you can use a heavier contour. Start by applying the contour to the areas of your face that are lighter, such as your cheekbones, nose, and chin. Use a brush or your fingers to apply the contour in a gentle, circular motion. Be sure to blend the contour into your skin well so that it looks natural.
You can also use a contour powder to add depth and definition to your facial features. To apply a contour powder, start by dusting a light layer of powder over the areas of your face that are lighter than the rest of your skin. Use a brush or your fingers to apply the powder in a gentle, circular motion. Be sure to blend the powder into your skin well so that it looks natural.
What You Need to Contour Your Face
When it comes to contouring, there are a few things you need to keep in mind. First, make sure to use the right type of contouring colors. For example, if you want to add depth to your face, use a shading contour which comes in a variety of brown (tan, light brown, etc.) shades. If you want to create a more angular look, use a highlighting contour which comes in a variety of cream (white, beige, etc.) shades. Second, always be sure to blend your contour makeup correctly. Too much or too little contour can look unnatural and unflattering. Finally, remember that contouring is most effective when used in conjunction with other makeup techniques, like highlighters and blush.

The most important part is to find the right shade for your skin and to match it to your hair and eye color. You can also use a contouring brush to apply the product evenly.
The Different Types of Contouring:
There are a few different types of contouring that you can do to help shape and enhance your features. These include:
- Highlighting: This is when you use a light-colored powder to add brightness, emphasize, and add more definition to your face by bringing them forward to make them more apparent.
- Contouring: This is when you use darker powders to create a more defined and sculpted appearance. to define, sculpt and make certain feature, such as your nose by making it seem smaller.
- Blending: This is when your using a darker powder, and you need to blend these colors to make the contoured areas look more natural and flattering.
Tips and Tricks for Contouring:
1.) Choose the Right Shade of Bronzer
When contouring your face, you’ll want to make sure that you use the right shade of bronzer. Some people mistake light bronzer for being too light, so when using bronzer, start with a lighter color and build up as necessary. You can also experiment with different shaped cheekbones or forehead highlights to create a more personalized look.
2.) Know Where to Apply the Bronzer
Contouring is the art of sculpting your face with a light application of bronzer to bring out the natural shape of your features and add dimension. Finding the right contouring palette can be time-consuming, so here are some tips on how to get started.
3.) Choose Your Palette
To create different effects, you’ll need different types of contours. Fluid and cream products will give a more natural look while powders that contain pearl or other small particles will provide more dramatic results. When choosing which product to use, start by deciding what kind of complexion you have. For example, if you have an oily T-Zone then using a lightweight fluid may work best for you. If you’re drier outside of your T-Zone, then a powder will most likely work better.
4.) Pick Your Contouring Tools
Bronzer and contouring brushes come in many shapes and sizes, so it’s important to find one that fits your needs. Bristles should be soft enough to blend but firm enough to hold the product in place. For example, a dense brush will give you more control over the application but may take longer to apply. Similarly, cream contouring pots come in different sizes and are designed to help you create specific depths of shade. For example, if you want an easy-to-transport product with light coverage use a small pot while if you want deeper coverage use a larger pot or palette.
5.) Start With Your Face Shape
Once you have your tools selected, it’s time to start contouring. Start by applying bronzer to the apples of your cheeks, the sides of the bridge of your nose, as well as the temples of your head. Use a light hand when applying bronzer, as too much will look unflattering.
6.) Use Your Contouring Brush
Now that you have a base of color, it’s time to start adding definition. To do this, use your contouring brush to sweep the product from the apples of your cheeks down towards your jawline. Be sure to blend the bronzer in well so that it doesn’t look too harsh or overdone.
7.) Add Depth with a Contouring Pot or Palette
If you want to add more depth and dimension to your contouring, then use a contouring pot or palette. To do this, pick up the product with your brush and apply it to the hollow of your cheeks, just below your eyes and along your jawline. Be sure to blend the product in well so that it doesn’t look too harsh or overdone.
8.) Use a Highlighter to Create Contrast
Contouring is a technique that can be used to create a more flattering appearance by adjusting the level of prominence of certain features on your face. It can be done with makeup, but it’s also possible to achieve the same effect with contouring tools, such as highlighters.
To contour, start by highlighting your cheekbones, temples, and jawline using a light-colored highlighter. Use a darker color to contour the areas below your cheekbones and below your eyes. Use a light color to contour the areas above your cheekbones and around your nose. Finish off by highlighting your cupids bow (above your lip, but below your nose) using a light-colored highlighter.
Contouring With Powder & Cream
Powder:
- Do your makeup like you normally would, aside bronzer, blush and highlighter.
- Choose a medium brown contour color and start with a medium angled face brush. Begin your contour line at the bottom of your ear, and pull the color down towards your mouth, but stop when you get to the tear duct of our eye. Then, blend that out using circular motions.
- If you have a large forehead, then take the brown contouring color around your forehead and blend it out towards your hair line.
- Then, we want to sculpt your jawline by going right underneath your jawline with a small angular brush. Get a fluffier brush and blend that down towards our neck.
- Lastly, you can add a little blush on the apples of your cheek.
Cream Contour:
- Do your makeup like you normally would with the exception of bronzer and blush.
- If you have a hand held contour stick, then begin at the bottom of our ear (below the apples and cheek bones. Pull the contour color towards the corner of your mouth, but stop one you are inline with your tear duct of your eye. Blend it out with a medium foundation brush or beauty blender.
- If you have a large forehead, then use the contour stick to go around your hairline. Blend that out towards your hair line.
- Lastly, take your stick along the bottom (underneath your jawline) and then blend that out with a medium fluffy brush and blend by dragging down your neck.
- You do the same thing with cream contour, only you use a small angular blush. You do the lines the same way, and blend out the same way
Common Mistakes People Make When Contouring
It can be tempting to try to contour your whole face at once, but this is a mistake. Instead, start by contouring your nose, cheeks and chin. Use a light hand when applying the contour powder; you do not want it to look harsh or unnatural. Once you’re finished, use a highlighter to add more contrast and definition to your features.
Each type of contouring has its own benefits and drawbacks, so it’s important to choose the right one for your face. For example, highlighting can make your skin look brighter and more awake, but it can also make it look artificial. Blending can be more natural-looking, but it can also be less intense. Contouring, on the other hand, can give you a more defined and sculpted appearance, but it can also be more difficult to achieve.
How to Avoid Making Mistakes When Contouring
When contouring, it is important to be precise in your application. Too much or too little contouring can result in an unflattering appearance. To ensure a successful contouring application, follow these tips:
- Use a light hand when contouring. Too much pressure can cause your skin to look unnatural and overly sculpted.
- Use a foundation that matches your skin tone as a guide for contouring. If you are using a darker foundation, use less contouring to avoid appearing too dark or heavy.
- Start with the areas of your face that are the most symmetrical and balanced, such as your cheekbones and jawline. These areas will look the most natural when contoured.
- Apply contouring using a foundation brush or sponge applicator. Be sure to blend the product into your skin gently, using circular motions. Do not apply too much pressure; this will only cause wrinkles and creases in your skin.
- Use a light hand when applying blush and bronzer, as these products can also be used to contour. Apply these products to the apples of your cheeks, along your jawline, and around your eyes, using gentle circular motions.
Contouring is a great way to accentuate your features and give your face more definition. However, it’s important to know how to contour properly in order to avoid common mistakes. With these tips and tricks, you’ll be a contouring pro in no time!
